Glassware Handling Tips
Failure to review your product’s care and handling may result in breakage of the product or personal injury. It is important to note the following tips for handling glassware:
Avoid extreme temperature changes of glassware items. Transitioning from one temperature extreme to the next may cause stress to the glassware and risk breakage from thermal shock. To avoid this:
-
1
Do not put hot items in cold glassware; do not put cold items in hot glassware.
-
2
Do not pour hot tea, coffee or other items into a cold glassware item or one that has just been rinsed; do not pour cold beverages into glass that is warm from rinsing or a dishwashing cycle.
-
3
Only expose your glassware item to higher or lower temperature when it is already at room temperature.
-
4
Allow glassware to reach room temperature before washing (by hand or in dishwasher).
-
5
Do not remove a glass bake dish from the oven and place on a cold countertop; always use hot pads.
-
6
Do not place a warm bake dish containing leftovers into the fridge; dish should be at room temperature.
-
7
Do not place cold or chilled bake dish into the oven or microwave; dish should be at room temperature.
It’s also important to handle your glassware items properly to prevent mechanical shock, which is a minute abrasion in the glass that causes weakness and makes it more susceptible to breakage from impact or thermal shock.
-
1
Do not put flatware into glassware.
-
2
Do not strike flatware against glassware.
-
3
Do not carry mulitple glasses at the same time by the rims.
-
4
Do not hit glassware against hard objects.
-
5
Do not drop glassware.
Other helpful tips when handling glassware include:
-
1
Do not pick large glass items by the rim (especially home décor and bubble balls).
-
2
Do lift and carry glass items by the bottoms or sides.
-
3
Do handle glassware gently (remove abraded, cracked or chipped glassware from use).
Glass Mug Handling Tips
Tips for using glass mugs:
-
1
Glass mugs are intended for warm beverages, not for hot beverages (i.e. do not pour coffee or tea directly from a pot or instant one-cup brewing machine).
-
2
Glass mugs are not safe for the microwave.
Bakeware Handling Tips
Tips for using bakeware items:
-
1
For conventional or convection oven use only. Do not use on top of the stove, on a grill, in a toaster oven, under a broiler, or with alcohol burners.
-
2
Your bakeware is safe to use in a microwave, but do not use in a microwave oven with a browner, to hold or support popcorn bags, or to heat food in browning wrappers. Popcorn bags and browning wrappers can concentrate heat in certain areas which could damage your bakeware. Also, avoid putting empty or nearly empty bakeware in the microwave as this can also concentrate the heat in one area. Be careful not to overheat, especially if melting butter, as this can cause hotspots that can damage your bake dish.
-
3
Libbey bakeware plastic lids are BPA free. They can not be used in a conventional or convection oven or they will melt. Plastic lids can be used when reheating food in the microwave but take care to leave the lid slightly open to avoid the build-up of steam which could potentially cause burns or damage the lid.
-
4
Avoid extreme changes in temperature. Be sure food is completely thawed before cooking or reheating. Do not take foods directly from the freezer to the oven. Preheat your oven before putting your bakeware inside because some ovens have a “rapid preheat” function which concentrates heat in one area that could damage your bakeware. Do not place hot bakeware on cold or wet surfaces, and never add liquids to hot bakeware. If you are baking an item that may release liquids, such as fat, moisture from frozen foods, or juice, place a small amount of liquid to cover the bottom of the dish before putting it in the oven. This will minimize the risk of a sudden hot spot on the dish when the liquid is released from the food.
-
5
Metal utensils can scratch and damage your bakeware. Using plastic and nylon utensils will help protect the bakeware surface. If bakeware becomes chipped or scratched, discard and do not use.
-
6
Clean carefully to avoid scratching. Scratched and cracked ware may break more easily and should be discarded. Wash bakeware in mild detergent and water, using non-scratch nylon or plastic pads to remove baked-on foods. Do not use harsh abrasives. For foods that are hard to remove, soak bakeware in warm water; foods will be easily removed with minimum scrubbing.
-
7
Both Libbey glass bakeware and plastic lids are dishwasher safe. Keep both the glass and the plastic lids away from any direct heat elements in the dishwasher.
WARNING: Failure to follow these instructions may cause the product to break.
Property damage or personal injury from cuts or burns may result.

In accordance with the California Safer Food Packaging and Cookware Act (hereafter “Cookware Act”), Libbey declares the following: Libbey cookware products contain substances on California’s Candidate Chemical List under the Cookware Act, as further stated below. Libbey also complies with all requirements for FDA Food Safe GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) and the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (a.k.a “Proposition 65”).

Glassware
All Libbey glass cookware products contain small amounts of added elements or compounds of Selenium and Cobalt. These are required additives, only a few parts per million, to ensure Libbey glass products maintain consistent color and clarity. As glass ingredients are melted together, they create a new material that does not separate into the original ingredients. Libbey has conducted leach tests on its glassware products and find no measurable amounts of either element migrating from the glassware.
Metals
Libbey is proud to procure products to support kitchen and dining room needs, including serve ware and tabletop items. Some metal items may be considered cookware under the strictest interpretation of the law and therefore are included in this disclosure. All food contact metal products Libbey sells comply with FDA GRAS requirements. However, many naturally occurring metal elements, such as iron, nickel, and chromium, make up food grade stainless steel and are included in the Candidate Chemical List. Libbey metal cookware, which includes pots, pans, bowls, and cooking utensils may contain the following products found on California’s Candidate Chemical List: Aluminum, Chromium, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel, Phosphorus, Sulpharic Compound, and Zinc.
Furthermore, all silver-plated cookware contains silver.
Ceramics
To compliment Libbey’s portfolio, Libbey sells ceramic dinnerware which in certain shapes, may be considered cookware as defined by the Cookware Act. Specifically, Libbey sells trays, bowls, skillets, and crocks. Most of the added chemicals which are outlined in the Candidate Chemical List and as called out below, appear on decorated trays and bowls. In all cases, the quantity of chemicals added to the ceramics comply with the Safe Harbor levels outlined in Proposition 65 and meet all FDA requirements to be food safe. The list of chemicals that may appear in our dinnerware are: Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Cobalt, Cobalt Oxide, Cobalt Sulfate, Lead, Nickel, Nickel Oxide, Selenium Sulfide, Titanium Dioxide, Alumina, Kaolin, Feldspar, Quartz, Triazine, Triamine Polymer with Formaldehyde, Cellulose, Benzoaic Acid, Zinc Stearate.
All Other Products
Libbey wood products are naturally occurring woods, which are stained with products that meet food safety requirements once the stain is dry. The potentially added chemicals are Toluene, Isobutanol, Ethyl Acetate and 2-butoxyethanol (Anti-Whitewater).
Libbey melamine products contain melamine and may contain formaldehyde. Melamine products comply with Proposition 65 and FDA food safe requirements.
